The Best Cities to Live in the Philippines For History Buffs

Every inch of the Philippines is brimming with culture and history. It’s the ultimate destination for history buffs who want to satisfy their curiosity. If your love of history is informing where you live, the sheer number of excellent places to visit and live in the country might overwhelm you.

Whether you’re interested in living in an Acropolis at Golden Horizon home in the vibrant city of Trece Martires, Cavite, or a condominium in the progressive Cebu City, this list can help you narrow down your options.

Cavite

A good place to start is Cavite, also known as the “Historical Capital of the Philippines.” The area has a good mix of culturally significant sites you can’t resist visiting more than once and a highly-developed urban area with everything you need to live comfortably.

For example, Kawit is famous for being the location of Emilio Aguinaldo’s home, where the Philippine flag was first waved. Meanwhile, Trece Martires in Cavite, where Acropolis at Golden Horizon is found, is an emerging economic center named after the thirteen martyrs of Cavite.

Manila

Manila is the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Metro Manila. It’s most known for Intramuros, the Old Walled City, which played a key role during the Spanish occupation. Inside the fortress are several historical landmarks like Fort Santiago, San Agustin Church, and Baluarte de San Diego.

Scattered throughout the city are some of the oldest and most renowned museums, educational institutions, parks, and government buildings. There are also numerous commercial and business establishments found here, making it easy to build the foundations of your career.

Vigan City

Vigan City is perhaps the best place to be if you want to travel back in time. Not only is the area incredibly peaceful and progressive, it’s known for being home to one of only 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Philippines. Calle Crisologo is a well-preserved heritage town that boasts stunning Spanish-era ancestral houses dating back to the 16th century and cobblestone streets.

This pedestrian-only zone even has calesas or horse-drawn carriages that ply the area, favored by tourists for getting around the town. Some ancestral houses have been converted into restaurants that serve the best local fare.

Cebu

Cebu may be the Visayas region’s economic and commercial hub, but it’s also a center for history, culture, and natural attractions. Outside of the capital region, Cebu is one of the most progressive places to live, boasting thriving business hubs where you can nurture your dream career.

There’s no shortage of historical sites to be found in this dynamic city, such as the Basilica del Santo Niño, the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines, and the Mactan Shrine, which commemorates Lapu-Lapu, the native leader who famously defeated Ferdinand Magellan in 1521.

And those locations are just the tip of the iceberg! Whether you’re seeking a quiet environment like in Acropolis at Golden Horizon in Trece Martires, Cavite, or a lively atmosphere like Cebu City, there’s something for every history buff to love in any of these cities.
