How to Properly Store Wine at Home

A bottle of wine is often found served in a home during special occasions or ordinary, fancy home dinners. People love drinking wine, especially during meals and parties, because it improves one’s appetite and can enhance and complement the flavor of the food served.

Aside from its taste, drinking wine also has health benefits. The right amount and right type of wine can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and other types of cancers. Drinking wine in moderation also helps weight control and memory retention.

If these reasons have convinced you to keep the wine in your beautiful home at Governor’s Hills in General Trias, Cavite, this article will teach you how to store your wine correctly so that you will maximize its taste and benefits.

Store Your Wine at the Proper Temperature

Temperature affects the quality of your wine, and storing your wine in warm or cold temperatures can spoil it. That said, it is best to store your wine around 13°C (55°F). Regardless of the type of wine, remember not to keep your wine in temperatures -4°C (25°F) to avoid freezing it and 20°C or 68°F to advance its aging process and destroy its volatile compounds. It is best if you can regulate your wine at a stable temperature.

Invest in a Wine Cooler

If you love wine and want to place it in the best storage possible, you may invest in a wine cooler or fridge. This type of fridge keeps wine at the proper temperature, about 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 60°F) and at the proper humidity level. Having a separate cooler for your wine will also prevent cross-contamination of food odors.

Aside from temperature, humidity should also be controlled when you store wine. When the humidity is low, the corks may dry out, and higher humidity may cause the labels on your wine to peel off. It is ideal to place your wine in a cellar or part of your home, kitchen, or pantry with a humidity of 60 to 68 percent.

Store Wine Bottles Horizontally

Storing your wine horizontally allows you to have more storage and easy access when getting the bottle you are looking for. Moreover, if your wine bottles have corks, horizontally keeping your wine will help the cork stay moist, which prolongs your wine's shelf life.

Let’s say you haven’t finished the bottle of wine you just opened. In that case, it is important to recork it so that your wine can last for 3 to 5 days. To recork your wine, you may place wax paper around the cork and slide it back to cover the bottle. Another way is to put a rubber wine stopper on your bottle to give it a tight seal.

Protect Your Wine From Light and Vibration

Wines should be kept in the dark because UV rays from the sun can alter and damage their flavors and aroma. Aside from placing it in a dark area, your wine should be away from sources of vibration because these can disturb the sediments in your wine bottle.

Wine is one of the most loved alcoholic beverages around the world. May these tips help you store your wine properly so you can enjoy it with your family friends both on ordinary days and special occasions.
