How to Improve the Security of Your Home

Upgrading your home’s security is always worth the time, money, and effort. Every lock, CCTV camera, and fence you install in your La Verne Residences home keeps you, your family, and your possessions safe from harm.

If you have the cash, having a professional assess your home and install the necessary security system is the best choice. However, if you’re on a budget, it’s okay to settle on some do-it-yourself security improvements.

Here are upgrades that are definitely worth your money.

Update Your Exterior Door

Your exterior door is your first line of defense against trespassers. It should always be in good condition. If it’s rotting, it’s due for a replacement. Steel is the best material in terms of durability, but it’s quite pricey. A solid wooden door offers a good balance of durability, affordability, and aesthetics.

If you’re going to replace your door, you might as well replace the hinges and frame. Rotting frames and rusty hinges make it easy for intruders to kick down or break your door.

Add an Extra Lock

Make sure you have deadbolt locks on your exterior door, too. Push-button locks on your doorknob can be easily pried, picked, or kicked open by intruders.

A deadbolt lock is significantly more difficult to bypass as its bolt extends further into the door frame than a knob lock. It’s also considerably thicker and more durable. Intruders can’t push this bolt back unless it’s engaged with a key or engaged with a knob from the inside.

Window Upgrades

Intruders can easily enter your home through an open or unlocked window. Make sure every window in the house has a lock. Test these locks every few months to see if they work properly, too. After years of opening and closing your windows, your locks are bound to wear out. Replace the faulty ones immediately.

Another improvement you can make to your window is to add a sensor. These devices alert you if your window is forced or broken open. Window glass break detectors are also great gadgets to have. They only respond to the sounds of broken glass, so you don’t have to worry about them going off when you accidentally drop a tray of food.

Install Smart Cameras

What’s great about today’s CCTV cameras is that they likely have smart capabilities. This means that they can sync up with your smartphone, tablet, or even laptop. You can easily monitor what’s going on in your home with just a few taps on your phone. If you need recordings, you can easily access them from a cloud server or a memory card.

Positioning is key for cameras. Set them up in places that let them cover as much of your home as possible. The mere sight of CCTVs can discourage intruders. So, you should also place cameras in easily recognizable locations, like next to your main door.

Upgrading your home security system brings nothing but upsides. It lets you rest easy at night, knowing you and your family are safe. These improvements also enhance the value of your house if you ever plan on selling it in the future. These gadgets are simple but useful security upgrades that are sure to discourage thieves and trespassers from entering your property.
